Are you not sure where to start with quilting with kids? Having a hard time imagining the kids working a sewing machine? Learning how to hand stitch? Or cutting out fabric all by themselves? Here are some great tips:
- Introduce them to the sewing machine. No need to give a lecture on all the parts of the machine. But it’s important to go over the basics such as the pedals, speed controls, presser foot, and the bobbin. And don’t forget to discuss about safety, keeping their fingers away from the needle.
- Involve the kids in every step of the process to help them feel a greater sense of ownership. Ask for their opinions when it comes to choosing the pattern and the color and type of fabric to use.
- Don’t try to get them to commit to making a quilt. It may be a huge, overwhelming project for them. Have them work on more manageable, kid-friendly things like doll quilts, quilted doll blankets, and placemats for tea parties. Also consider mini quilts, throw pillows, mug rugs, pot holders, small table runners, etc.
